I love my crockpot because it allows me to cook healthy slowcooker recipes that my whole family enjoys. I can make dinner even on days when we are super busy.
With rising costs in groceries, it also helps that this method of cooking saves us quite a bit of money. Thanks to easy crockpot meals, e no longer spend hundreds of dollars a year on fast food and pizza. Instead, I look for whatever lean meats and veggies are on sale and then turn it into a healthy dish.
What Makes A SlowCooker A Healthy Way To Cook?
I already mentioned that using a slow cooker keeps us from eating fast food, so that in itself makes it a healthier choice. I also look for recipes that include lean cuts of meat and lots of fresh or frozen vegetables. The slow cooking process and the fact that I don’t need to add any oil or fat make it a good choice for cooking healthy meals.
How To Choose Healthy Recipes For Your Crockpot
Of course not every slow cooker meal is healthy. Many traditional crockpot recipes include plenty of canned foods and soups that are full of salt. Look for recipes that use lean meats like chicken or turkey for example. A great example are my favorite crock pot pot roast recipes here. When a recipe calls for ground beef, substitute ground turkey or ground sirloin.
I never use “Cream Of….” type soups from a can. Instead, I make my own version using powdered milk, corn starch and seasonings. It’s a much healthier option.I also prefer low sodium, non-fat broths for crockpot cooking.
Last but not least, replace canned veggies with fresh or frozen ones to instantly make your dishes healthier.
My favorite source of recipes is Crockpot Cooking Made Simple. This is an ebook that includes some general crockpot cooking information and tips. It includes information on what size crockpot to use, how to best clean it and my favorite – how to turn regular recipes into slowcooker ones. Also included is a collection of 500 delicious slow cooker recipes. Almost everything I’ve tried has been a big hit with my family and most of the recipes are pretty healthy. I do make the occasional modification like using my own homemade version of cream style soups.
Whether you’re new to crockpot cooking or you’re a seasoned pro, I recommend you grab a copy of Crockpot Cooking Made Simple and give these healthy slowcooker recipes a try.
